I agree you should let nature take its course but having said that ive helped out a few. On the last hatch there was an egg in the incubator two days after the rest had hatched and we opened it thinking it was dead. She was still alive but very weak. We left her in the incubator for 24hrs but no better so took her out and put her under a bulb. Within an hour she was up and eating. With every hatch you learn something new.

wow marie thats brill . i was getting the impression that if they cant make it out on their own they wont have the strength to walk as legs not strong enough..i've a batch of cochins in now after candling them four are deff fertile out of six ,, hope they come out ok.. also put in fertile hybrids eggs x light sussex rooster so they should be strong.. think i'll leave at that then till next year... by the way the incubators workin fine :) :)

Hi cath
Great news about the incubator. Ive had better results from the incubator this year then from broody hens. I have a light sussex at the moment sitting on faverolle eggs but she hatched eggs two years ago so i know she will be ok. I also have a duck sitting but she doesnt know what she wants. Good luck with your hatch and let us know how you get on.

hello ,,i've a kacki cambell that wanted to go broody but there was no male involved.. so we got a male but hes too young to do anything yet.. ssssooooooooooooooo i got some fertalised duck eggs and put them in the nest... now nothing sitting on em.. had bntam that sat for while but even she got up.. i dont know, think they've too much freedom and don't want to settle down..... thought that was only the males..lol

I don't "do" ducks, but friends who did say they often make lousy mothers, so they usually give their duck eggs to broody hens to hatch/rear. All usually goes well until the ducklings take to water, at which point the poor "mother" hen almost has the vapours! running up and down beside the water, yelling at them to come out!
